As you probably already know, Procreate brushes are incredibly fun and intuitive to use. All of our brushes are ready-to-use straight out of the box but we've compiled a few handy tips for making common edits to your brushes and restoring them to their default settings when things get weird.
How to change the scale of a brushes texture or pattern.
Many of our brushes contain an embedded texture or pattern referred to in Procreate as the brush "grain". The default grain scale for most of our brushes is about 30-50% and knowing how to adjust this is especially helpful when using any pattern based brushes such as our Beat Tones Halftones, Lithotone and Grain Shader brush sets.
To change the scale of a brushes texture take the following steps.
Step 1 - Tap the brush you wish to edit twice to open the Brush Studio editor.
Step 2 - Go to the Grain Tab
Step 3 - Adjust the Scale slider. You'll see the stroke preview change as you move the slider (whoah!).
Step 4 - Tap the Done button to commit the changes.
Test and repeat if necessary.
Smooth out jittery strokes with Procreate's Streamline settings.
If you've had one too many coffees, or tend to make very slow brush strokes when drawing, you can average out jittery strokes for smoother results using Procreate's Streamline settings.
This feature is most useful for inking brushes but a word of warning, it may make your brush feel a little ropey or unresponsive when drawing very short strokes so test your settings and adjust if necessary.
To adjust a brushes Streamline settings take the following steps:
Step 1 - In the Brush Studio editor, go to the Stroke Path Tab.
Step 2 - Adjust the Streamline slider.
Step 3 - Tap Done to commit the change. Test and repeat if necessary.
How to reset a brush to its default settings.
Any changes you make to a Procreate brush (including the brush size and brush opacity) are saved to the brush permanently until you reset it. This is really helpful if you're switching back and forth between different brushes and don't want to make the same changes over and over.
We've embedded reset points into all of our brushes so that you can easily restore a brushes settings with just a couple of steps if you've tweaked your brushes too much or just want to go back to the default.
To reset a brush take the following steps:
Step 1 - In the Brush Studio editor, go to the About This Brush Tab.
Step 2 - Tap the Reset brush button
Step 3 - Tap Reset when prompted then tap Done to commit the change.
To reset an entire brush set, simply reinstall the brush set.
How to make a copy of a brush and save it permanently with new settings.
Sometimes you might want to have multiple copies of the same brush with different brush sizes, texture scales and opacity settings ready to go to speed up your process and hit that deadline.
Take the following steps:
Step 1 - Swipe left on the brush you want to make a copy of.
Step 2 - Tap Duplicate.
Step 3 - Make any changes to the brush such as brush size, grain scale or streamline settings. If you're making changes in the Brush Studio editor be sure to tap Done when you are satisfied to commit the changes.
Step 4 - Tap the brush twice to go back to the Brush Studio editor then tap About This Brush.
Step 5 - Rename your brush with a modifier to set it apart from the original (eg Small, V2 etc).
Step 6 - Tap Create New Reset Point then tap Save when prompted.
Step 7 - Tap Done to commit the changes.
How to adjust your Apple Pencil's pressure settings.
Everyone draws a little differently whether it be the hand we draw with (lefty's unite!) our grip or the pressure we place on the screen. Pen pressure plays an important part in how Procreate responds so it's worth familiarizing yourself with Procreate's pressure curve settings to figure out what feels right for you and your drawing style.
To edit your pressure settings take the following steps:
Step 1 - Open the Actions menu (the tool icon).
Step 2 - Tap the Prefs Tab.
Step 3 - Tap Edit Pressure Curve.
Step 4 - Tap and drag the graph to edit the Pressure Curve. See below for examples of different curve settings.
There's no right or wrong way here and it really helps to explore how different settings work with (or don't work with) various brushes and styles so keep experimenting until you find what feels right for you.
